The Advanced Search & Recovery Specialty has more practical aspects than theory, but that does not make the theoretical background less important. The course leads you through the equipment items and the procedures for various techniques to searching, marking and recovering. Some of the techniques are unique to this course and have been used in real recovery projects.
The course teaches the calculations needed to decide on lift bag size, air supply and surface weight (along with a comprehensive list of specific weights), teaches alternate ways to tie knots, lets you benefit from the long experience the author has on searches and lifting techniques and provides you with tips to master challenging assignment in the practical part of the course in a rewarding manner.
The course is modular. At the end of each segment you answer questions related to the knowledge you just acquired. Correct answers then give you access to the next course segment. After completion of the last
segment, you receive a document that allows you access to the practical part of the course. With this document you can address yourself to one of the instructors that are qualified for this program to complete the practical part and to become certified as an Advanced Search & Recovery Specialty Diver.
During the practical part you participate in training sessions on land and in open water. The sessions on land are a preparation for the four dives and consist of “dry runs” for search patterns and a workshop for tying knots. The first three dives in open water allow you to gain experience with different searches and lifting techniques. The last dive is different. In this dive you are given a Search & Recovery related assignment. It is then up to you to decide on the equipment and techniques to achieve your goal and to execute the dive.
For participation in this course you must be a certified diver and you must have had training in underwater navigation. The minimum required level is PADI Open Water Diver or an equivalent certification level from another training organization, and either an Advanced certification including navigation training or a navigation specialty certification. The minimum age is 12.
The price for the online part of your training is 39 Euro. For the price of the practical part, you can address yourself to the internet page of the instructor of your choice. After completion of the last course segment, your access code will remain active for another month. This allows you to refresh your memory before starting the practical part of your training.
