Most diving related incidents have hypoxia as one of the consequences. Being able to provide oxygen in an emergency is an essential skill for all divers, for boat crew and diving professionals. Basic oxygen first aid skills are taught in several courses. The Advanced Oxygen First Aid Specialty goes beyond that point. The course does not only teach when and how to give oxygen, but also goes into detail on the physiological processes that take place in the body before and after you start providing first aid. The course creates understanding rather than „just knowledge“.
The program is modular. You progress trough the medical background and technical considerations step-by-step. At the end of each segment you answer questions. Correct answers give you access to the next course segment. After completion of the last segment, you receive a document that allows you access to the practical part of the course. With this document you can address yourself to one of the instructors that are qualified to complete the practical part and to become certified as an Advanced Oxygen First Aid Specialty Diver.
In the practical part of the course you will learn details about different types of equipment for first aid with oxygen, including the techniques for assembly and disassembly of that equipment. You will also participate in a number of accident simulations (scenarios) that allow you to apply your knowledge of the medical and technical aspects in “real life”.
This specialty is aimed at divers who are really interested in how things work. Rather than just being able to help an injured diver, they want to understand the processes that go on in the body of the diver while they are performing first aid.
The level of the course is high, but we have avoided the use of complicated terminology. The physiological concepts are explained on the basis of concepts with which divers already are familiar. This makes the course accessible and understandable for all.
For participation in this course you must be a certified diver and you must have a first aid certificate (including CPR). The minimum required level is PADI Open Water Diver or an equivalent certification level from another training organization. Your first aid diploma may not be older than 24 months. The official minimum age is 12, but you must be advised that this course has an advanced level that will proof to be too challenging for some kids of that age.
The price for the online part of your training is 69 Euro. For the price of the practical part, you can address yourself to the internet page of the instructor of your choice. After completion of the last course segment, your access code will remain active for another month. This allows you to refresh your memory before starting the practical part of your training.
